Coranderrk
2020

Coranderrk was first established as a reserve for the Aboriginal people of south-eastern Victoria, operating as an administration to ‘manage’ Aboriginal affairs (a policy later adopted across the rest of the country).

The inquiries and subsequent petition during the late nineteenth-century became defining moments in the history of Indigenous  political resistence. The people of Coranderrk rose against the oppressive system under which their lives were often controlled.

Today, Coranderrk stands as a place of recreation for locals and tourists alike. There are hardly any official monuments of the historical events that happened on this site; only memories that lie buried deep within the landscape.
